Ryu

Ryu was an orphan adopted by the martial art master Gouken and trained in the martial art of Ansatsuken. Ryu and the American Ken trained closely together after Gouken took on Ken as a student. The two eventually became like brothers.

When Ryu was in his early twenties, Gouken told Ryu he was ready for competition. During the first World Warrior tournament, he crushed his competition and ultimately defeats the host of the event, Sagat, winning the tournament. During the fight, Sagat had nearly beat Ryu into unconsciousness when Ryu, having such a strong desire to win, became engulfed by the power of Satsui no Hadou and struck Sagat with a nearly-fatal Metsu Shoryuken. Sagat was defeated and left with a massive permanent scar on his chest to remind him of the defeat suffered at the hands of Ryu.

Sometime after the first World Warrior tournament Ryu’s master Gouken is apparently murdered by Akuma. Ryu vows revenge on Akuma and travels the world tracking down his master’s killer. Ryu eventually enters the Street Fighter 4 World Warrior tournament hoping to face and defeat Akuma once and for all.

During the tournament he meets up with his long time friend Ken, and Sakura whom he encourages to keep training. Ryu also meets up with former rival Sagat and remembers their promised rematch. He defeats Sagat again and then defeats the ultimate boss Seth in the S.I.N. secret laboratory headquarters.

Ryu unleashes the power of Satsui no Hadou on S.I.N.’s BLECE machine, a weapon of mass destruction developed to harness energy in the human body. Sakura aids him and they leave together with the weapon destroyed.

Ryu later learns that his master Gouken was not in fact killed during his battle with Akuma. Ryu and Gouken spar in a match in that Gouken eventually wins. Gouken seals off the residual Satsui no Hadou power within Ryu, thereby preventing Akuma’s ambition of fighting Ryu in the Satsui no Hadou state.
